The Residence

The main residence is a 4 bedroom, 1.5-story house, built in the 1920’s in the rural coastal community of Mavillette, NS. The main level (wheelchair accessible) is accessed by a ramp to the front door. There is a paved driveway to the main front ramp and down to the back of the house. The front door is 32” and there are many 29” doorways within the house ( there are so many doors! )

There are also visual fire alarms installed throughout.

The house is located on HWY 1, which includes cars travelling at speeds up to 80km/hr. All roads to the beach are paved however there are no sidewalks or paved shoulders. Cars and neighbours are generally thoughtful of pedestrians however you should take necessary precautions. The house is located on 1 acre of land and there are houses on either side and across the street. On the left side of the house is the local postoffice (attached to a neighbours home) which is wheelchair accessible and where all letter mail for the house is delivered. The house is heated by a wood stove and baseboard heaters. Firewood is provided. Please note there is a black shed at the front of the house (not pictured) where firewood is stored. The entrance to the shed is not wheelchair accessible however weekly restoring of firewood can be arranged.

The site is located in a rural community and there is no public transit. Access to a car is required. Pets and children are welcome, and the floors are a mix of carpet and Hardwood.

Main level

This wheelchair accessible level has a living room, studio, kitchen, bathroom and a bedroom.

The living room is very large and spacious and includes a large sectional couch, a comfortable chair, a large writer’s desk, a computer monitor, a kneeling chair, several lamps (no overhead lights) and a bookshelf filled with books, games, puzzles and art. The wood stove is also located in the living room so it is the warmest room in the house. Wood is stored in the living room - about a week’s worth if the fire is burning constantly, and there is a woodshed located on the front deck. The living room is carpeted and is accessed via a door close to the main entrance, and also via a door to the kitchen. There is a visual fire alarm located in this room.

The kitchen includes lowered counters and sink, and the fridge has a freezer on top and a low base. Dishes and food are stored in upper cupboards but can be relocated to the hutch in the adjacent dry studio for easier access. The front hall, dry studio, Basement, living room, back door, and bathroom all have doors into the kitchen, and the main-floor bedroom is accessible via the bathroom. There is a visual fire alarm in the kitchen.

The bedroom has a double bed, and an electric fireplace. This room is located just off the main floor bathroom for easy access. There is not a visual alarm in this room, but a plug-in visual alarm with bed shaker is available.

A work room / dry studio is also located on the main floor, and includes a large work table, a trolly for supplies, a large bay window and a hutch. It has hardwood floors and gets great daytime light. It is accessed via a door close to the main entrance and also via a door to the kitchen. This room can also be made into a main-level accessible bedroom if required.

The main-floor bathroom includes a stacked washer dryer, a regular toilet (no grab bars) and a shower. The shower is not roll in and includes a 2” inch step at the floor. The sliding doors open in the centre. The shower has a tiled seat, grab bar and an adjustable shower head for seated use.

Second Level

The second level (not wheelchair accessible) Accessible by a flight of stairs in the front hallway, and includes 3 bedrooms, (Two queens, one Double) one of which can also be used as a painting studio and includes an easel.  Stairs and hallway are carpeted. 

There is a visual fire alarm in one bedroom as well as in the hallway. All bedrooms are heated with baseboard heaters.

The upstairs bathroom, has a sink, toilet, tub and hand-held shower head.

Workshops and Studios

Main Exterior Studio Building (16’ x 24’): Multi-use. Wheelchair access via a ramp. Building located behind house via a packed gravel path. 36” door, Large work table which can adjust between standing and seated height. Lights, electricity and baseboard heat.

Basement Workshop: Multi-use (2024: not wheelchair accessible yet). Accessed by a flight of stairs from kitchen, or via an exterior door and temporary ramps. It includes a wood working workshop with tools and a worktable as well as access to a water hose from the pump (no utility sink).

Garage: Multi-use. (not pictured) Flat, no-barrier entry from rear driveway. No overhead light, plug-in fluorescent light. Easily made into a dark room, by covering two small windows.
